Wow. Time flies when you’re having fun … or, well, when you’re traveling a lot!
This past month was by far my busiest since I have been back in Chicago. The main reason was recruiting. The four weekends in October are the only weekends we are allowed to go out and watch tournaments during the fall, so I was in California and Texas watching some potential Blue Demons!
I went home to Houston a few weeks ago to see my jersey retired by my high school. I can’t put into words what that night meant to me. During the flight there, I was really excited. Not only was I getting to spend some quality time with my family, but I was going to see old friends and coaches. A good number of my friends in the area came out to see the ceremony and eat dinner with my family and me. I actually started to cry during the ceremony. It never hit me how proud folks can be of one of their own. Not to mention, I think my career finally took shape in my mind – I’ve never put into perspective everything I’ve done from May 2001 until now and how far I’ve come.
The Cy-Springs band learned the Olympic theme song for me and the softball team all came to meet and congratulate me. They even presented me with a bucket that had a Panthers Softball t-shirt and another jersey of mine. They noted that #20 (my high school number) has not been worn since I graduated, and - lastly - the football team signed a football for me! It was a night to remember! I want to say a big thank you to all my coaches, friends, classmates and teachers who were there for me!
Halloween weekend was filled with softball as I was back home (again) to recruit. Tucker had a costume, but silly me left it in Chicago. I do have a picture of him in it, though. He’s a dinosaur with a caveman on the back! Since I left the costume by accident, I just put a Halloween bandana on him to be festive. He was a good sport about it all, but I just hope he tolerates me at Christmas! ;)
Speaking of Tucker, he’s getting so big! I can’t believe it. He’s lost most of his puppy teeth and I was constantly finding all over the house. Not to mention that his toys all of a sudden had little blood marks. The poor baby! He’s adjusting well, though. We’re gearing up to head to Texas for Thanksgiving, where he’ll stay with my parents until I drive back up here after New Year’s.
I also taught at clinic in New Jersey. It’s the first one I’ve done in a while, so it was an experience. But, I had fun though. I met some nice people and enjoyed interacting with the kids. I even had one girl write me a little note, which I kept so it can be posted on my office bulletin board soon.
It’s finally cold here in Chicago, and to be honest, I kind of like it! I’m going to enjoy this weekend in the city hopefully. It’s time to get Christmas presents bought, and to see something other than softball.
Stay warm … til next time!
